First-of-its-kind

Foodware Certification

CEH, in partnership with Clean Production Action (CPA), launched the first-of-its-kind GreenScreen Certified™ Standard for Food Service Ware. The groundbreaking certification sets a new safety standard for everyday foodware items like disposable plates and bowls that do not contain PFAS “forever chemicals”, plus thousands of other chemicals of concern. This certification is a powerful tool in the fight to eliminate PFAS from foodware, and at its baseline, avoids known regrettable substitutions. Many manufacturers are unaware of all the chemicals in their foodware products—and many purchasers are unaware of how to ensure their products have preferred chemistry. GreenScreen™ Standard for Food Service Ware draws from CEH’s extensive work testing single-use food ware for PFAS and builds on CPA’s GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals, the globally recognized tool for chemical hazard assessment used by governments, companies, and certification standards to encourage the design and use of inherently safer chemical ingredients. CEH is thrilled to feature Eco-Products, Inc. as the first manufacturer to earn the GreenScreen Silver designation for a food service ware product line. NatureWorks LLC is the first company to achieve the GreenScreen Certified Standard Platinum level of certification for a food service ware material. We look forward to empowering more manufacturers to communicate their use of safer chemicals to buyers and position themselves as market leaders in safer chemistries and innovation.

When one chemical is banned, only to be replaced with another chemical just as harmful, or potentially worse. The GreenScreen Certified™ Standard for Food Service Ware requires full disclosure of all chemicals in the product and they must be assessed for hazard using GreenScreen tools.

“We are very excited to earn GreenScreen Silver Certification for our Vanguard line of compostable products. Finding an alternative formula to replace PFAS was our top priority. But we also wanted to ensure our products did not contain other chemicals of high concern or known regrettable substitutes. We are incredibly proud to be the first manufacturer to offer an innovative foodservice product with a preferred chemistry.”
