Advising Colleges and Universities to Create a Healthier Built Environment

Building on our long-term relationships with higher education, CEH is deepening and expanding this work to help colleges and universities create healthier environments for students, faculty, and staff. In 2022, CEH is hiring a new staff, Senior Manager of Sustainable Procurement for Colleges and Universities, to provide dedicated support to schools across the nation. And, in an exciting new partnership, CEH is working with Duke University to embed toxic-free built environment questions into their “campus as a classroom” work. Currently, CEH is an advisor for Duke University’s undergraduate course, ENV 245 Theory and Practice of Sustainability, where teams of students work with campus and community clients to advance a research question. As an “advisor,” CEH helps students evaluate how the university could make the greatest impact on environmental health by examining where should they start, whether it's furniture, cleaning chemicals, foodware, or another product category. CEH is thrilled to partner with Duke University to engage in dialogue with students about how to detoxify the built environment and to inspire action.

Collective annual furniture purchasing dollars of CEH's procurement partners. When major institutions with multimillion dollar budgets purchase healthier furniture, the entire marketplace shifts toward safer products.

"CEH brings a whole other level of detail to the conversation on sustainable furniture. They have helped our firm develop resources and presentations to educate our clients and designers across North America, and internationally, about flame retardant regulations in furniture. I really appreciate CEH’s openness to understanding the industries we work with and their ability to speak industry language, whether you’re a designer, an architect, or a manufacturer.”
